Robert Johnson in class

Staff Member of the Month

For McHenry High School math Instructor Robert Johnson, teaching through a pandemic is just another new thing in a lifetime of new things.

He’s struggled a bit with the necessary technology for digital learning during the COVID-19 lockdown, and now with juggling remote students along with in-person students. He’s also getting used to his new math classroom in the newly built Center for Science, Technology and Industry.

“I let them see me struggle. But we never quit,” Johnson said. “Life is a series of freshman events.”

Johnson’s positive attitude during challenges was mentioned frequently by those who nominated him for the West Campus Staff Member of the Month Award for March. Many said they appreciate how he helps students by working so hard to form relationships first.

“Mr. Johnson is beyond dedicated and amazing,” said Nikki Wirth, a District 156 parent. “He works so hard to make connections with his students and help them in any way possible so they’re successful.”

Derek Wlasiuk, Class of 2022, said he’s grateful for Johnson’s sense of humor “that makes everything a little better.”

Johnson, who grew up in Joliet, initially wanted to become a firefighter or work in construction, but an injury put an end to those plans. He started working with an after-school program for young people, and decided to become a teacher.

Johnson went back to school and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Lewis University. He taught middle school math for three years in Elgin before coming to McHenry. Now in his 24th year as a teacher, Johnson taught at East Campus for 18 of those years before coming to West. While teaching, he also earned a master’s degree in education from Webster University.

Johnson said he likes seeing his students have that “aha” moment when studying math.

“I enjoy their energy and I feed off that energy,”
