MCHS Homecoming 2019 kicks off Monday
McHenry High School’s East Campus and West Campus unite next week to celebrate the annual Homecoming tradition with a week of events that start with a parade through downtown McHenry on Monday.
The 2019 Homecoming, with an outer space theme, is planned by student council members at both East and West, and also involves special spirit dress-up days, PowderPuff football games, painting windows of downtown businesses, sporting events including a Friday football game, and -- of course -- a dance.
Leah Pelletier, East Campus science teacher and student council advisor, said the annual rite of passage for high school students is a great way to bring students together at the beginning of the school year. The tradition signifies a time of celebration, especially when alumni return for the home game.
“Having something just for the sake of enjoyment is important,” Pelletier said. “I hope it’s lifelong memories that they are making.”
Pelletier said students do all of the planning, including selecting the yearly theme. This year, students requested food trucks at the rally and bonfire Monday, so Fat Tomato and Riverside Chocolate Factory trucks will be there selling food.
Starting Oct. 1, teams of students have busy painting windows throughout the area to promote Homecoming events.
Monday’s parade kicks off at 7 p.m. from East Campus. The parade ends at McCracken field, for a rally and bonfire. It is there that Homecoming royalty for each campus will be announced.
Tuesday, there’s a home soccer game at West Campus against Burlington Central and a home volleyball game at East Campus against Prairie Ridge.
On Wednesday, juniors play in a Powder Puff game at 6 p.m. at McCracken, then seniors play right after that game. On Thursday, the girls swim team competes against Huntley at 4:30 p.m. at West Campus.
The Homecoming football game is at 7 p.m. against Crystal Lake South at McCracken field. The Homecoming dance is at 8 p.m. Saturday at West Campus.
