East Campus Staff Member of the Month inspired by music, kids

It is early Friday morning in the East Campus band room, and the Symphonic Band students are warming up. After some stops and starts, the haunting strains of “Armenian Dances,” fill the room.

After a bit, Band Director Spencer Hile plays back a recording of the band, while pointing out places for improvement. “What do we need to do as musicians?” he asks. “Grow. We need to grow.”

It’s a typical morning for Hile, who is in his fourth year as McHenry High School band director, But while the morning may have been typical, it capped off a special week for Hile.

Just a few days earlier, Hile was recognized as the Staff Member of the Month for East Campus. “That was a really nice way to start the week,” Hile says.

The music and the kids motivates him as a teacher, Hile says. He adds, “It’s also wanting to provide kids with life-changing experiences.”

“I like to think it’s fairly obvious when I teach that I just love kids,” he says

In addition to Symphonic Band, Hile oversees and teaches Jazz Band, Concert Band, Percussion, Marching Band and more.

Being named Staff Member of the Month for October was a nice surprise for Hile. He had several nominations from both students and parents.

“This is so much more than a job or a paycheck for him,” reads the nomination from John and Jen Finch, whose daughter has been a student for four years.

Hile says he hopes to inspire his students to be great. And that takes work. “To me, it’s push, push, push but try to make it fun,” he says.

Hile is the second Staff Member of the Month for East Campus since the award program started. Each month, a staff member from each campus is selected from recommendations of other staff, students, parents and community members.

Staff members receive and a gift card from either Brunch Cafe or Meat and Potato Eatery. MCHS appreciates the support from sponsors.
