East’s Dunn credits her personal approach for earning Staff Member of the Month
In the week leading up to finals, Heidie Dunn, English teacher at East Campus, was busy preparing to test her AP Language and Composition and Rhetoric and Research students for the end of the semester. But when one of her students asked Dunn if she’d like to see photos of his new puppy, she didn’t hesitate to take a look.
Dunn’s personal approach to teaching, along with her effort to push students to do their best, earned her several nominations from students for Staff Member of the Month for East Campus. “She has a very kind heart and it has not changed from the first time I met her my freshman year,” said East Campus junior Shelby Huffington. “She truly is one of the most generous people I know and I thank her for all she has done for me and all the other students as well.”
Dunn, who is also a SAT Skills Instructional Coach, credits her personal teaching style for her ability to build connections with students.
“I don’t think you can be an effective teacher if you think of the kids in terms of stereotypes,” she said. “I try to get to know them as people.”
Dunn started teaching at East Campus in the fall of 1996, and has taught every English class the district has offered. She was theater director for 15 years, and counts several teachers as former students, including current theater director Andrew Hillier.
A Wisconsin native, Dunn has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in English and theater, as well as drama and Spanish. Dunn said she was able to major in several subjects because she used AP credits from high school.
She has master’s degrees in fine arts and educational leadership, and she’s finishing a master’s in educational technology.
Dunn also works with the district’s ZAPS program, an SAT prep course. She is the third East Campus staff member to be recognized through the district award program.
