McHenry High School sponsors screenings of “Like” to focus on social media use

McHenry High School District 156 is partnering with the McHenry Downtown Theater to host two screenings of the “Like” movie on Feb. 17 in an effort to shine a light on society’s sometimes unhealthy connection to smartphones and social media.

The film will be shown at noon and 2 p.m. Feb. 17, which is a day off school for Presidents Day, at the theater, 1208 N. Green St., McHenry. Both showings will be followed by a brief discussion session.

Tickets go on sale during the week of Feb. 10, and are $3 each. Tickets will be sold at both McHenry High School East Campus and West Campus during lunch periods, and also in the main offices at both schools. Also, tickets will be available at the theater that week.

“Like” is a documentary produced by IndieFlix that looks at how important technology has become in our lives, and the sometimes negative consequences. The goal of the film is to inspire technology users to self-regulate to create better balance.

IndieFlix is the company behind “Angst,” a documentary for teens and parents that looks at anxiety.

Maura Reid, District 156 prevention and wellness coordinator, said she hopes the movie inspires students to reflect on how distracting technology use can be. “If they knew how their devices are affecting them, they can make better choices,” she said.

The trailer will be shown during the school day at both McHenry High School campuses during the week before the screenings. The movie itself is 49 minutes long.

In addition to inviting McHenry High School students and families, Reid said she is promoting it to the middle schools. The screenings are open to anyone interested.
