Monica Anaya, food service worker at East Campus, said she always wants to treat students in the East Campus lunchroom the way she’d like her own children to be treated. That motto earned her the recognition of students and staff, and the East Campus Staff Member of the Month Award for January.
Anaya, who has worked at the East Campus cafeteria for four years, said she was surprised by the award. For her, being a safe place for students is just the way she is.
“I know what it’s like to be a teenager,” said Anaya, who has five children of her own. “I just try to be their friend.”
Her nominations for the award all came from students who say she is a welcome presence at East Campus.
“She is always very welcoming to students, and makes an effort to brighten their day.” said sophomore Nathan Nichols in his nomination
Sophomore Alyssa Guadardo echoes those sentiments. “She always makes my day every time I see her,” she wrote in her nomination.
Anaya, who has had other jobs in food service before coming to East Campus, said she enjoys her time with students. “It’s natural for me to talk to these kids. They tell me about their day,” she said.
The Staff Member of the Month Award started this school year at McHenry High School to recognize MCHS staff who go above and beyond for students.
Each month, a staff member from each campus is selected from recommendations of other staff, students, parents and community members.
Staff members receive a gift card from either Brunch Cafe or Meat and Potato Eatery. MCHS appreciates the support from sponsors.
