We began Hispanic Heritage Month on September 15, 2025 with a "grito" in front of the Upper Campus.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a national recognition and celebration of the significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities to our society. While we recognize the significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities all year round, Americans reserve September 15 through October 15 each year as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

September 15 is significant because that is the day recognized as the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

At McHenry Community High School, staff and students gather each year to kick off the celebration with the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) with a “grito” or “cry” to call for independence. Throughout the month, the Hispanic heritage and contributions are celebrated through class work, reading material and other activities.

MCHS honors and respects the diversity of the school community.
