Women's History Month is recognized throughout March as a time to reflect on the significant contributions, achievements, and resilience of women throughout history. In the U.S., the celebration started with the creation of Women’s History Week during the week of March 8 to coincide with International Women’s Day.

President Jimmy Carter formally proclaimed Women’s History Week in 1980, and the U.S. Congress declared March as Women’s History Month in 1987.

At McHenry Community High School, classroom teachers and staff recognize important contributions of women, and reflect on the history of women in society. In 2022, the McHenry Activism Club marked the 50th anniversary of Title IX with a special presentation of former teachers, coaches and students to talk about the growth of women’s sports following the landmark civil rights law.
