LASO hosts first ever Latin X-Perience for students

The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) at McHenry Community High School is hosting the first ever Latin X-Perience career and cultural event this Friday (April 14) at the school’s Freshman Campus.

Scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, the first part of the event is a career fair featuring Latino speakers representing several different career paths, including real estate, engineering, education and more. Three of the speakers are MCHS graduates.

The second part is music and dancing with DJ Jerardo, raffles and food for sale. It all takes place in the cafeteria at Freshman Campus, 1012 N. Green St., McHenry.

Admission for the event is $5 and a friend can come for free with each paid admission. El Taco Feliz will have a taco truck on hand to sell refreshments.

Spanish Instructor Otto Corzo, advisor to the LASO club, said the idea to host the event has been something they’ve been talking about since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“LASO wants to offer some representation to the Latino student community,” Corzo said. “It is with representation that Latino students can receive the validation needed for them to see themselves in a particular field.”

Corzo said that while the presenters are all Latino, the event is for everyone. “Music and dance unite us all.”

LASO members have been working at the Warrior Warehouse since last year selling snacks and ice cream. It has been such a success that club members decided to provide a bigger experience to Latino students.
