Veterans Day event from 2022

A veteran who survived the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon and a World War II veteran will join the panel of speakers participating in an all-day Veterans Day event for students at McHenry Community High School.

The Nov. 10 program is planned for social science classes at both Freshman Campus and Upper Campus, and also includes several other veterans, including current and retired educators and alumni. The panel presentation is an annual event at McHenry Community High School.

Veterans typically share their stories of service and answer student questions. Organized by the school’s social science division, the panel presentations are popular with students and staff alike.

“It is always a special day when we welcome our veterans to our buildings to talk about their experiences,” said Sean Sterner, chair of McHenry Community High School’s social science division.

“We take this opportunity to honor them, too.”

This year, Sterner was able to bring on several veterans who hadn’t participated before, including Army veteran Ryan Yantis, who was working at the Pentagon on 9/11, and World War II veteran John Rickerd. Sterner met both veterans at this year’s Honor Flight welcome ceremony hosted at Upper Campus in August.
