Matt de la Peña, a New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Newbery Medal for his book “Last Stop on Market Street,” is the featured author for the 2024 Writers Week celebration of reading and writing at McHenry Community High School.
Author of “Ball Don’t Lie” and “Mexican White Boy,” de la Peña is scheduled to give presentations during Periods 1-4 on Feb. 8.
The visit is part of Writers Week, which is Feb. 5-9. Writers Week is planned around the annual Poetry Slam for all sophomore English students.
The week kicks off with a Celebration of Words on Monday, Feb. 5. MCHS students and staff read written works that are important to them during this morning event.
This year’s Poetry Slam will be Feb. 9. Sophomore students write poetry to share with classmates and a panel of judges select winners.
