Dan Florek from Vindictive Vinyl speaks to Graphics 2 students

McHenry Community High School’s Graphics 2 students are embarking on a new vinyl car wrap project to honor the city of McHenry’s Parks and Recreation department that will result in art on donated car doors and a hood to display at school and beyond.

Daniel Florek from Wisconsin-based Vindictive Vinyl visited Matt Connor’s Graphics 2 students just before spring break to help them get started. He went through his steps, from start to finish, for creating impactful vehicle wrap displays for his customers.

Florek encouraged students to do research before making their designs. But he warned them not to get too overwhelmed because car wrap designs should be simple and easy to understand since most people can’t spend a lot of time looking at a car wrap while driving.

“You’ve got about 10 seconds to pick up on a car wrap when you’re on the road,” Florek said.

Florek also cautioned students that car door handles and other physical features of vehicles will have an impact on designs. Connor said designing wraps for the city’s parks and recreation department should be a good challenge for students since there are many aspects of the parks department.

After designs are created, several will be selected to show park officials, who will choose the winning designs. Then students will print and wrap car doors and a hood donated by XXX.

Connor’s graphics students have done similar projects for the American Legion and the McHenry Moose Lodge. The pieces wrapped in honor of the two organizations are on display in Connor’s classroom at McHenry High School Upper Campus.

In addition to offering tips for the project, Florek told students about one of his recent projects for the Volo Auto Museum. He transformed an older car into Santa’s Ho-Ho-Ho Hot Rod before the holidays. Check out a WGN-TV story about the car.
