Social science Instructor Kathryn Larson was honored along with about 450 teachers, staff, administrators and volunteers from throughout Illinois on April 18 during the 2026 Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year Awards in downstate Normal.
The Illinois State Board of Education hosts the annual awards ceremony to recognize those who go above and beyond in serving Illinois students. Larson received an award for Meritorious Service as an early career educator.
“Illinois’ educators make our schools and communities immeasurably stronger,” said Dr. Tony Sanders, state superintendent of education.
The 52nd annual banquet also included a video message from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who offered his congratulations and thanks to the award-winners.
The award program recognizes classroom teachers as well as administrators, support staff, community volunteers and more for the impact they make in classrooms throughout the state.
In 2025, MCHS English Teacher Heidie Dunn was named Teacher of the Year for the Far North suburban region, and a finalist for statewide Teacher of the Year.
For Larson, a third-year teacher at MCHS, the experience has been rewarding.
“It was wonderful to be able to interact with other professionals who are passionate about showing up for their students and creating the most effective classroom environment possible,” Larson said.
Larson is currently teaching AP Government, Revolutions Throughout History, AP Psychology and AVID 11.
Larson has a bachelor of science degree in history education from Illinois State University, with minors in political science, sociology and psychology.
