Construction work at Freshman Campus to improve parking lot

Big changes are in the works for Freshman Campus, including new car and bus drop off and pick up areas that will make for a safer and more attractive back parking lot.

Parking lot construction work started in March to create a bus driveway semi-circle off Waukegan Street behind Freshman Campus, formerly East Campus. The entrance and exit will allow buses to stay on the north end of the parking lot.

On the south end of the parking lot, there will be a semi-circle entrance and exit for families to use that will be separate from bus traffic. Landscape and green space will be added between the semi-circles to create an attractive addition to the parking lot.

New walkways will be created and marked.

“I’m excited about the changes,” Freshman Campus Principal Sean Sterner said. “What I really like is the additional greenery and landscaping.”

Work has also started on building a storage building behind the parking lot.

In addition to the parking lot changes, new directional signs are being added inside Freshman Campus, along with inspirational growth mindset signage.

Orange and black MCHS logo wraps are also being added throughout the building as well.

Sterner said he’s hoping to have everything ready for this summer to welcome the Class of 2030.

“We’re trying to keep the traditions alive while also bringing in some new features,” Sterner said.
