In effort to help students plan for their futures, McHenry High School Upper Campus is launching a Next Step Night from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 29.

The event replaces the traditional back-to-school night to focus on giving freshman, sophomore and junior students and families a closer look at all of the different course offerings and career pathways available before they start planning for next year.

Starting at 6 p.m., there will be a variety of tables throughout the building representing different curriculum areas such as math, science, social science, fine arts, English and foreign language, and career and technical education.

In addition, families will be able to meet with College and Career Counselor Curtis Menke and other school counselors, representatives from McHenry County College, and more. There will be information about a variety of important topics, such as dual credit and Advanced placement courses, ACT testing, Seal of Biliteracy, and mental health resources.

“I am excited to open Upper Campus to families so they can see the many pathways and opportunities our students have,” Upper Campus Principal Greg Eiserman said. “The night will provide a great opportunity for families to discuss course options and career pathways with our staff.”

There will also be several meetings in the main gym with the exception of the Spanish language presentation, which will be held in the Warrior Room on the fourth floor. Here is the meeting schedule:

6-6:25 p.m. Class of 2030 meeting

6:30-6:55 p.m. Class of 2029 meeting

6:30-6:55 p.m. Spanish language presentation - Warrior Room

7-7:25 p.m. Class of 2028 meeting

7:30-7:55 p.m. Earning college credit in high school

Students and families are encouraged to attend their own class meeting, and visit tables throughout the building either before or after their class meeting. Volunteer students will be present to help guide families throughout the building.

For those who can't attend, meeting presentations will be posed on the Next Step Night page on the district's website.

School officials hope the evening will help students and families plan for the future, and also be a fun evening out. The Next Step Night was born out of feedback from families.
