Sarah Doherty

Sarah Doherty, a MCHS junior, was accepted into the Northwestern Medicine Discovery Program, a two-year curriculum to give young people a closer look at careers in health care.

While much of the program is virtual because of the pandemic, Doherty said she’s looking forward to learning more about health care from guest speakers, group discussions and activities. It starts this Saturday with orientation, and meetings are held once a month.

“Health care is something that I’m interested in, and I wanted sort of an outlook on what the future looks like,” Doherty said.

She’s considering nursing and medical school for the future, as well as law. Doherty said she is taking Project Lead The Way’s Introduction to Biomedical Science at MCHS, and thinking about trying the medical residency program.

Through the biomedical science class, she’s learning about how to spot different types of medical issues and diseases. The medical residency program is a capstone program and a partnership between MCHS and Northwestern Medicine to allow students to shadow different health care professionals.

“I wanted to take it because I’ve heard great things about the residency program,” Doherty said.

“I think this class made me even more interested in it.”

Doherty said she heard about Northwestern’s program from her high school counselor. To learn more, visit the Northwestern Medicine Discovery Program page.
