AlertNow System Reminder

In the event that school needs to be cancelled due to weather conditions, parents and staff will be notified through the AlertNow system at approximately 6:00 AM.

Parents and staff can also check this website for such an announcement as well.

Family Vacation Policy Reminder

Since absences are disruptive to the educational process, vacations taken during school time are strongly discouraged.  In the event that a family’s schedule requires that a student be absent for a family vacation, the parent or legal guardian only, must request permission for the absence at least 1 WEEK IN ADVANCE.

Permission may be granted by obtaining a form from the attendance office and having it signed by a student’s Dean or Assistant Principal.   Credit for class work would then be given only for work completed and turned in.  Since some schoolwork may not be able to be made up, a vacation taken during school time, even if approved, could result in a lower grade for the student.  FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS POLICY COULD RESULT IN THE ABSENCES BEING UNEXCUSED (NO MAKE-UP CREDIT).

H1N1 Update -Information Updated October 28, 2009

McHenry County Department of Health Letter to Parents - October 22, 2009
H1N1 Vaccination Plan Letter to Parents

McHenry High School H1N1 information– Please read:

As of October 19, McHenry East Campus has had three confirmed cases of H1N1.  One student was diagnosed in September and is back in school.  One student was diagnosed early last week, and has doctor’s clearance to be back in school.  The third student is expected to return by the end of this week.

Both schools in District 156 are following precautionary procedures as outlined by the MCHD.

The Center for Disease Control has changed its recommendation that people with flu-like symptoms should stay home/isolated until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

  • School dismissal is not advised for a suspected or confirmed case of novel influenza A (H1N1) and, in general, is not advised unless there is a magnitude of faculty or student absenteeism that interferes with the school’s ability to function.
  • Students, faculty or staff with influenza-like illness (fever with a cough or sore throat) should keep away from others as much as possible, stay home, and not attend school or go into the community (except to seek medical care or for other necessities) for at least 24 hours after fever is gone. (Fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
  • Students, faculty and staff who appear to have an influenza-like illness at arrival or become ill during the day should be isolated promptly in a room separate from other students and sent home.
  • Aspirin or aspirin-containing products should not be administered to any confirmed or suspected ill case of novel H1N1 influenza virus infection aged 18 years old and younger due to the risk of Reye syndrome. Refer to pediatric medical management for guidance regarding use of any medications, especially those containing aspirin.  (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/clinicians/)
  • Parents and guardians should monitor their school-aged children, and faculty and staff should self-monitor every morning for symptoms of influenza-like illness.
  • Ill students should not attend alternative child care or congregate in other neighborhood and community settings outside of school.
  • School administrator’s should communicate regularly with local public health officials to obtain guidance about reporting of influenza-like illnesses in the school
  • Schools can help serve as a focus for educational activities aimed at promoting ways to reduce the spread of influenza, including hand hygiene and cough etiquette.
